Carleton Burgan (CP 1659), National Museum of Health and Medicine Description: Image of Pvt. Carleton Burgan, B Company, Purnell's Maryland Legion, age 20. Burgan was admitted to the hospital in August 4, 1862 with pneumonia. He was given the mercurial drug calomel, which caused an ulcer to form and spread across his tongue, mouth, cheek, and eye. The calomel killed his upper maxillae which was removed and is in the museum. Dr. Gurdon Buck of City Hospital in New York performed operations to rebuild Burgan's face. This image is prior to any reconstructive surgery.
