| Description | Built between 0 AD and the 600s AD, during the Roman and Byzantine periods, the terrace houses were luxurious villas inhabited by the elite of Ephesus, and stand on a hillside within the ancient city. The houses fell into ruins after the city was abandoned during the Byzantine period, when the city’s harbor silted up, and it faced an exodus of population and economic activity. The houses were excavated during the 20th Century, uncovering very well-preserved mosaics, ornaments, and frescoes, which are protected under a large canopy structure. The ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015. |
