Inserido num terreno ajardinado da propriedade que tinha na Golegã, Carlos Relvas mandou construir um bonito edifício, onde se combinam o ferro e o vidro, muito ao gosto do Romantismo, que seria o seu atelier e onde viria a dedicar grande parte do tempo à sua paixão pela fotografia. Nas numerosas salas que fez corresponder às diversas fases da fotografia, desde os preparados químicos aos "retoques" finais e cenários montados, Relvas guardou os aparelhos mais avançados do seu tempo adquiridos no estrangeiro, expôs técnicas de revelação, coleccionou artigos e estudos portugueses e internacionais, estudou e divulgou o processo da fototipia, em que se notabilizou, reuniu um espólio do maior interesse para todos os amadores e profissionais que se interessam pela fotografia. Pondo a nova técnica ao serviço da arte, Carlos Relvas deixou-nos documentos fotográficos de muitos dos aspectos do Portugal do séc. XIX. Escritores, políticos, gente do povo, monumentos, igrejas, aldeias, toda uma sociedade e forma de estar do Séc.
