Summary
[edit]DescriptionCasa Loma, Toronto 1152 (4615124573).jpg |
Toronto's castle, Casa Loma (House on the Hill) was conceived by Sir Henry Pellatt as a house suitable to receive royalty. It took three years to build and Sir Henry and his wife would only live in it for ten years. It was never completely finished and would eventually bankrupt him. The City of Toronto would seize the castle for property taxes owing. The architecture, both internal and external is extraordinary. Despite the mostly decorative chimneys, it actually had coal-fired central heating. Don't feel too sorry for Sir Henry. He was an astute businessman and would eventually build another fortune. However, he would never again attempt something so grand as Casa Loma . canadianhistory.suite101.com/article.cfm/casa_loma |
