William J Will, NZ Medical Corps, WW1 metal case- dark green-grey painted metal with gold-painted stripe around base; lid attached by two metal hinges at rear and hasp latch at front; contains two removable metal trays; box divided into 4 compartments, one with hinged lid; interior painted blue-grey; two hinged metal wire handles, one at each end; key attached to latch with string; painted in white on lid- 'COLONEL WILL - New Zealand Medical Corps' canvas bag- tan-coloured, one piece, top opening canvas satchel with brown leather binding sewn around seam; two brown perforated leather belt straps with metal buckles secure lid; interior lined with green silk; two compartments; two small leather tabs at top, one missing; marked outside front face- W.d.Will; marked on outside base- Lt. Col. Will. VD. MD; inside base of lid- W.D. WILL |

William J Will, NZ Medical Corps, WW1 description- metal case; dark green-grey metal; named on lid- 'COLONEL WILL - New Zealand Medical Corps'; with canvas satchel marked WJ WILL; tan canvas with leather binding and straps William Johnston Will was born in East Taieri, Otago, 30.11.1858, son of Rev. W. Will; educated East Taieri Public School, University of Otago, Edinburgh University; graduated from Edinburgh University in 1884 and entered practise in Green Island District Military service- joined East Taieri Rifle Volunteers in 1878 and continued involvement with NZ Volunteer Forces in role as surgeon through to WW1; in 1898 became surgeon-major on staff 1st Battalion Otago Rifle Volunteers; in WW1 served with main body as Assistant Director of Medical Services until invalided out in September 1918; also had a long association with the St John's Ambulance Association; was chairman of the Dunedin Centre of St John's Ambulance; received St John's Ambulance Medal for distinguished Service in Ambulance work; became Knight of Grace of the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
