Title
Cast copper alloy zoomorphic, sitting duck Roman brooch, dating to the second half of the 2nd century AD
Description
English: Cast copper alloy zoomorphic, sitting duck Roman brooch, dating to the second half of the 2nd century AD.

The brooch is a 3D brooch and is complete. The pin is hinged, it has now bent but is still intact. It's height is 27mm from the head to the base of the catch.

The duck's eyes are small hollows either side of the head, they may have been filled at one point. The beak has a rounded end. The neck has 2 lines around it as it meets the body. The body is decorated with 2 lines which run parallel around the front of the body and then along the length of the body to cross over to finish at the tail. The tail is slightly pointed and has some additional detail to represent tail feathers.

The base of the body is plain and flat. The catch is quite chunky and widens towards it's base. It has a small rectangular slot for the pin to fit into. The pin is hinged onto an axis bar which is enclosed in the wings. It is made of a slightly different alloy than the rest of the brooch and so has a different colour.

The brooch has an even green patina. The pin is more orangey/brown and is shiny.
