Title
English: Central School, first building, ca. 1886
Description
English: In 1882, Seattle's citizens voted to raise their taxes to build a new Central School. In the spring of 1883, the school superintendent led a procession of students and teachers from the old building at Third Avenue to the new one on Sixth Avenue. The new Central School had room for 800 students, and was the largest in Washington Territory. The wood-frame building burned in 1889.

In this photo, students and teachers stand outside Seattle's Central School. Pioneer Seattle photographer Theodore Peiser took the photo early one afternoon, sometime between 1883 and 1889.
