Inaugurado em agosto de 2008, este Centro de Interpretação faz-nos recuar até 1957, ano que marcou para sempre a história da vulcanologia mundial, quando a 27 de setembro um novo vulcão nasceu no mar, o vulcão dos Capelinhos. Esta erupção, que se prolongou até 24 de outubro do ano seguinte, provocou uma forte alteração na geomorfologia da ilha do Faial, e mudou para sempre a vida daqueles que a testemunharam. Como que um ensaio sobre a formação das ilhas, este vulcão mostrou-nos como a força telúrica do planeta é capaz de criar paisagens tão sublimes. Cinquenta anos depois, a área envolvente ao Vulcão dos Capelinhos, junto com o seu farol – guardião antigo desta paisagem vulcânica – apresentavam-se apenas como ponto turístico, marcado pela ruína e pela memória da erupção, sem qualquer ponto interpretativo que permitisse "…explicitar o que o olhar capta…" (Lopes, N.; 2008). É então construído este espaço, de modo a conservar a paisagem existente e requalificar o farol, encontrando-se o edifício totalmente submerso nas cinzas projetadas e alicerçado na cota original do terreno antes da erupção. O Centro de Interpretação do Vulcão dos Capelinhos (CIVC) leva-nos numa viagem interpretativa que nos permite compreender o fenómeno em termos geológicos, enquadrá-lo na geologia do Planeta e "reviver" os últimos oito milhões de anos que levaram à formação destas nove ilhas em pleno Atlântico. Composto por vários espaços visitáveis, a oferta do CIVC é bastante diversificada e a sua atuação centra-se essencialmente na divulgação e preservação do património geológico. Galardoado com vários prémios, o CIVC pertence ao Parque Natural do Faial e faz-nos sentir que vivemos num planeta vivo e numa região em que os vulcões são muito mais do que fenómenos destrutivos e assustadores, são, como diria o poeta – "as fábricas da paisagem".
