Summary
[edit]DescriptionCerastium glomeratum plant1 (12095086044).jpg |
Introduced, cool-season, annual, straggling, weak herb, to 30 cm tall. Leaves are oppositely arranged, around 10 mm long, pale green, roughly oval, sticky and hairy. Flowers are arranged in dense clusters at the ends of stems and have 5 deeply 2-lobed, off-white petals. Flowering is in spring. A native of Europe, it occurs in open woodlands, pastures, lawns and disturbed areas where ground cover is reduced. It can be abundant if there is good winter and spring rain. Usually a very minor component of pastures and not a troublesome plant. Its abundance is an indicator of poor ground cover. It is not readily eaten and is unlikely to contribute much to livestock grazing. It dries off quickly as temperatures rise over spring. No specific measures are warranted to remove chickweed from pastures. |
