Summary

[edit]
Description
English: On Sept. 29 at 9:00 a.m. EDT (1300 UTC) the MODIS instrument or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer that flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite look at Chaba in infrared light, providing cloud top temperatures. MODIS data showed the highest, coldest cloud tops and strongest storms were circling the center. Those cloud tops were as cold as minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 62.2 Celsius). NASA research has shown that storms with cloud top temperatures that cold have the ability to generate heavy rain.

At 11 a.m. PDT (1500 UTC) on Sept. 29 Chaba had reached tropical storm status. The center of Tropical Storm Chaba was about 1,011 nautical miles southeast of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, Japan. It was centered about 14.1 degrees north latitude and 140.0 degrees east longitude. Maximum sustained winds had increased to near 45 mph (~40 knots/75 kph) and continued strengthening is forecast.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center, the organization who is now issuing forecasts for Chaba said the storm will move west, later northwest while intensifying to typhoon status after four days.
