Notes coolie chairs first made in Hong Kong in 1950s; name derived from shape of hat worn by Chinese labourers; constructed from plastic, cane and steel and initially very cheap. Also references to manufacture of coolie chairs in New Zealand in late 19509s - early 1960s - some made by recent Dutch migrants, one of whom had a factory at Papatoetoe, Auckland. Ssimilar chairs also made at Blind Institute, Auckland
