Notes The most famous of Hepplewhite's chair designs was the ‘shield-back', which he developed but did not originate. He also used oval and heart shapes. Many did not have a splat connected with the seat. Their decoration was carved or, if intended for drawing rooms or bedrooms, painted or japanned. A novelty was the Prince of Wale’s feather which Hepplewhite may have invented.
