Woodcut illustration, showing the path ofyangqiao mai(Yang Heel Vessel), fromJingmai tu kao(Illustrated Study of the Channels), published in 1878 (4th year of the Guangxu period of the Qing dynasty). Yangqiao maiis one of the Eight Extraordinary Channels (qi jing ba mai). It originates at theshenmai(Extending Vessel) point at the outer side of the heel, and runs upwards along the outer ankle, the back of the calf and the outside of the thighs, hips and upper body, and along the neck to the corners of the mouth. It enters the inner canthus of the eye where it comes into confluence with thetaiyangchannel andyinqiao mai(Yin Heel Vessel), then ascends again to the top of the head where it joins the footshaoyangchannel. Pathological changes in this channel are commonly thought to provoke insomnia, pain in the eyes, etc. Wellcome Images |
