Summary[edit]

Description

On 4 May 1840, fourteen rangatira signed the Cook Strait sheet of te Tiriti o Waitangi (www.flickr.com/photos/archivesnz/12195249795) in Queen Charlotte Sound. Thirteen more signed the next day (5 May). Like the previous signing at Port Nicholson, the rangatira probably signed aboard the schooner Ariel after an explanation from Henry Williams.

The names of those who signed can be found at www.nzhistory.net.nz/media/interactive/henry-williams-tre...

A month later, on 16 June, Thomas Bunbury arrived at Cloudy Bay aboard the HMS Herald. With him was the Herald Sheet. Bunbury landed at Guard's Cove that evening, where a number of rangatira refused to sign for fear of losing their lands. However some signed the following day.

This is a harbour chart of the Cook Strait anchorages between 1849-53. It shows Queen Charlotte Sound, Cloudy Bay, Port Underwood and the surrounding ports, the location of Māori villages, and any beacons or lights (in colour). It was surveyed and published by the British Admiralty, and comes from a bound book of similar charts.
