Notes Part of the Charles Ramsden Collection of Signed Bindings. Signed by Corfmat. Macchi states; XIX th second quarter century, Paris, bound by Corfmat. According to the directories, J. Corfmat first appears at St. Jacques 110 in 1840 where he continued till 1843. He was probably active for considerably longer and a binder of the same name appears at St. Jacques 124 in 1849. His favourite decoration is à la rocaille. Further, there are number of other binders of the same name and approximate period, whom it is difficult to place exactly. Thus there is a second Corfmat in the 1842 Almanach at Galande 37; an E. Corfmat Jeune at St. Sévérin 16 in 1847-1849 and yet another at Zacharie 9 in 1849 (P. Culot, Relieurs et reliures, 1995 p. 486; J. Fléty, Dictionnaire, p. 47 (Corfinat); C. Ramsden, French bookbinders, p. 57, 226).
