Notes The emergence of the true chest of drawers was a practical innovation of furniture design of this period, a hybrid inspired by the chest or coffer. Drawer depths varied to provide storage choices. Simple geometric moulding patterns, instead of carving and inlay, were applied to decorate the fronts.
