Summary[edit]
DescriptionChicago - Downtown from Air (1) (4286916802).jpg |
Downtown Chicago from the air in 1974. The main landmarks are John Hancock Center, Lake Point Tower, the Standard Oil Building (white), One First National Plaza, and Sears Tower. If you look closely, to the left of the Standard Oil Building and dark buildings near it, you can make out the Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower. They are small compared to many lesser known buildings. You can also see the Merchandise Mart, the large, low building closer to the camera than the Standard Oil Building. Sears Tower was not in earlier photos, because it had not yet been built. It was opened in 1973, after three years of construction. It is the tallest building in the U.S., and was taller than the World Trade Center in New York. It has 108 floors, and is 1,450 ft (442 m) high. The building has been sold, and is now Willis Tower, named after a British insurance firm. |
