Afrikaans: Kinderarbeid in die Verenigde State, vroeë 20ste eeu te Bells, Texas. Met vergunning: Preusmuseum; Kongresbiblioteek; Nasionale Kinderarbeidskomiteeversameling. Fotograaf: L.W. Hine (1874–1940).

Al hierdie kinders van onderskeidelik vyf, ses, sewe, nege jaar en twee 'n bietjie ouer, was besig om katoen te pluk op H.M. Lane se plaas te Bells, Texas, VSA 1913. Slegs een volwassene, hul tante het gepluk. Hul pa was besig om te ploeg.

Edith, vyf jaar (sien voorafgaande foto), pluk heeldag. Hughie ses jaar oud, 'n meisie, pluk heeldag. Alton, sewe jaar oud, 'n seun, pluk vyftig pond per dag. All these children five years, six years, seven years, nine years and two a little older, were picking cotton on H.M. Lane's farm Bells, Texas, USA 1913.

Only one adult, an aunt was picking. Father was plowing.

Edith, five years, (see preceding photo) picks all day.

Hughie six years old, girl, picks all day.

Alton, seven years old, boy, picks fifty pounds a day.

Ruth, nine years old, picks seventy-five pounds a day.

Rob and Lee are about ten or eleven years old. The very young children like to pick, but before long they detest it.

Sun is hot, hours long, bags heavy.
