Title
Cloth seal
Description
English: A two part lead cloth bale seal. One side has a privy mark of the weaver, clothier or the searcher. Geoff Egan writes of a very similar seal BUC-ED1BA6 from near Tring: "The complicated mark can be restored in its entirety from parallels (e.g. Egan in London Archaeologist 3.7 1978, 178 fig. 2) as comprising at least six, perhaps ten letters (noted in alphabetical order as it is not possible to single out a definite surname initial) ACDRST, and perhaps EHIL could also be present. These can make 'T Richards' or even 'searched' - though it need not be either of these. The scratched numerals on the other disc probably refer to a measured weight in pounds or a length in yards. It is probably late C16th/early C17th. At least seven parallels are known from London and another was found at Bristol.
