Originally built for New York Central Railroad’s coal coffers decades ago, this heavily reinforced concrete coal tower still stands roadside on U.S. Route 12 in Michigan City.
Designed to hold 250 tons of coal, a chute opened and emptied it out via gravity into a steam locomotive’s waiting train cars as a mechanical, side conveyor carried new stock to the top.
Bridged over two active train tracks, Michigan City's coal tower and others throughout the world remain today due to excessive costs of demolition and train downtime.
