Summary[edit]

Description Chewing a wad of coca leaves helps inhabitants of the Andes face the effects of high altitude and a difficult life. But something to make the mouth alkaline must also be added, and while now slacked lime is now available, many prefer the traditional items such as powdered sea shells. Here in the altiplano of northern Chile, cactus ash (those grey nuggets) are employed. Although coca wads are too bitter and uncomfortable for the average gringo, a tea made from the leaves is very helpful in adjusting to high elevations.
