Defending the Confederacy in South Texas A member of a prominent South Texas family, Benavides became the highest ranking Mexican American offi cer in the Confederacy. His most notable victory was the defense of his hometown of Laredo. When Union forces attempted to capture the city on March 19, 1864, Benavides and the 33rd Texas Cavalry successfully turned them back. |
