Title
Combe: Roman Nertomarus brooch
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy fragment of a Late Iron Age to early Roman Langton Down brooch of Nertomarus type. Only the spring and cylindrical spring cover, the head and a small part of the bow survives. Where the spring cover is broken, six coils can be seen above. The pin is mostly missing. The head is decorated in relief with a triangular moulding enclosing three dots, between two scroll mouldings (Cf. Hattatt no.270, “hooks and eyes”). Unlike the other recorded examples, the design on this brooch is very clear. On this example, the design appears to resemble a shouting man with clenched fists raised above the head. The brroch is 27.98mm wide, 22.50mm long and weighs 13gms.
