Notes |
This may well be tooled in gold, not blind. Possibly bound in Saxony or Tubingen. Macchi states; A very similar, altough not identical panel-stamp example (upper cover: 1 st top right; lower cover: 3 rd bottom left) is reproduced in M. Von Arnim's, Einbandkunst, n. 46 on Martin Luther, Eine einfeltige weise zu beten, für einen guten Freund, Leipzig, Valentin Baptist, 1551. An analogous cover bound in Tübingen by the Jakob Andreä Master kept in the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (I. Schunke, Die Einbände der Palatina, pl. IC (no text), is reproduced in M. von Arnim's, Einbandkunst, n. 70 on Jean Jacques Boissard, Emblematum liber, Frankfurt, M. Theodor de Bry, 1593 too. The layout is analogous, but the background is richer in the second panel-stamp kind. I. Schunke refers in this last case to a Samuel Streler (see C.24.a.18., C.65.l.9.) successor because of the bindings he produced for the Tübingen theologian Jakob Andreä (1528-1590). |
