Title
Complete cast copper alloy annular buckle of Medieval date (AD 1350 – AD 1400). Drawing: Frank Basford.
Description
English: Complete cast copper alloy annular buckle of Medieval date (AD 1350 – AD 1400). Maximum diameter 42mm. The maximum diameter of the frame in cross-section is 4.3mm. Weight 10.66g.

The undecorated frame is circular; in cross section it is sub-circular with a maximum diameter of 4.3mm and a minimum diameter of 2.5mm. The narrowest point appears to represent the part that has taken the greatest wear from the tip of the pin. The fragile surface of the frame is light brown corroded and has exfoliated in places revealing the underlying metal which is dark green/brown. The pin, which has an overall length of 41mm, has a similarly fragile surface and is sub-circular in cross-section. The shaft tapers evenly from the loop, where it is about 5mm in diameter, to the sharp pointed tip. The underside of the tip of the pin has an undercut that may have been created by wear rather than design. On the upper surface of the pin, between the shaft and the loop, is a small raised transverse swelling, now barely visible. The loop fully encloses the frame. There is no evidence for a pin constriction. Consequently the piece has been identified as a buckle rather than a brooch.
