Santa Iria, Padroeira de Tomar, terá vivido na antiga cidade visigótica Sellium / Nabância, em meados do século VII e a sua história trágica tornou-se uma lenda que faz parte do imaginário tomarense e foi tratada em muitos textos literários desde a Idade Média até Almeida Garrett chegando, em várias versões, aos nossos dias. Era filha de Eugénia, nome latino, e de Hermígio, nome germânico. Em 653 da era de Cristo, Britaldo, filho do governador da cidade, prendeu-se de amores por Iria, uma bela menina de 15 anos, quando se encontraram na Igreja de S. Pedro Fins. A impossibilidade de ter Iria, por ela se preparar para a vida religiosa, deixou-o transtornado. Também Frei Remígio, que educava Iria, sucumbiu à sua beleza! Repudiado pela jovem, o monge vingou-se dando-lhe uma infusão que a fez inchar, como grávida. Ao saber do facto, e julgando-se traído, Britaldo mandou matá-la enquanto orava, junto ao Rio Nabão, no pego do Convento cujo nome viria a ser de Santa Iria, às mãos do assassino Banão (anagrama do nome do rio). Arrastado pelo rio, o corpo chegou ao Tejo, a Santarém, onde, por graça divina surgiu um túmulo que a envolveu e permitiu a sua veneração a todos quantos presenciaram o milagre. Em homenagem à Padroeira e a esta mítica lenda, realiza-se em Tomar a Feira de Santa Iria, que integra a Feira das Passas, em Outubro, com o seu dia mais importante a 20 de Outubro, data que celebra Iria. Esta Feira foi criada por Carta Real de Filipe II de Espanha, a 3 de Outubro de 1626, substituindo a anterior, de Santo André. Era feira de tendeiros, sirgueiros, sombreireiros, canastreiros, merceeiros, cordoeiros, ourives, sapateiros curtidores, oleiros, taberneiros, peixeiros, vendedores de legumes, de pão, de alhos, cebolas e esteiras de castanhas, de ferramentas e alfaias, peneiras e varas, de caixotaria, de cobertores e de panos.
