Title
Copper-alloy roman zoomorphic brooch
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy zoomorphic brooch dating to the Roman period c. AD 100-200.

The brooch is broken near the head and missing the pin and lug, but otherwise complete. It takes the form of a fish or dolphin and is approx. 52.1mm in length.

The fish's tail is triangular and inset with two panels of triangular, brown coloured enamel, much of which is now missing. The maximum width of the tail is 12.9mm. On the underside of the tail are two semi-circular lugs with evidence of iron staining around a pierced hole. This would have been the pierced plate portion of the brooch hinge.

The body of the fish curves outward and widens to form the fish's head. To either side of the head are slightly protruding tabs depicting fins. The maximimum width is 13.1mm. Down the centre of the head is a raised crest, rising to a height of 6.1mm. At the terminal point of the crest, the surface of the head slopes downward and thins to a pointed nose or snout, tipped with two transverse decorative lines. To either side of the crest are eyes formed of an annulet inset into a circular depression. On the underside of the snout the remains of the catchplate are present.

The patina is dark green in colour, worn in places but generally smooth on the underside.
