Title |
Copper alloy Medieval leash |
||
Description |
English: Medieval copper alloy two-piece swivel for a leash of elaborate and abnormal form. There is an almost H-shaped strap loop at both ends with the sides, which are in the form of animal heads, projecting beyond the short cross bar. Both parts have a hollow body, integral with the loop which expands beyond a collar comprising multiple short longitudinal ribs framed by twin radial ribs, to a hemisphere with a line of multiple engraved ring-and-dots bordering the straight end where both parts turned.The arrangement by which they turned is hidden within the body. Length 71.5mm. Diameter 13mm. Width for strap 4mm.
Cf. Examples of similar form, if not decoration, from Dymock, Gloucestershire (GLO-EBCCB2) and (an openwork swivel) from Wreningham, Norfolk (NMS-2B69E3). Another example with the relatively uncommon H-shaped loop comes from Market Deeping, Lincolnshire (NLM4785). 12th century.
