Title |
Copper alloy cast Georgian fob seal |
||
Description |
English: Copper alloy cast Georgian fob seal probably dating between 1714 to 1830AD. The fob is intact apart from the seal inlay and would have originally been gilded. The openwork casting consists of a suspension ring extending to two connected crescents bearing laurel-leaf detailing, the lower ends of which are attached to the base which comprises a plain border enclosing a dished panel. On the underside would have been an intaglio now missing possibly made of glass. These fobs were often gilt-bronze of a style popular with the gentry of the Georgian age, usually displaying a classical bust or the owner's monogram. Reference: Pateman, B. Collecting Seals, London, 2008, p.133. The length is 19mm, the width 17mm and the thickness 13mm. The fob shares similarities with SUR-59DBE8 on the databse. |
