Title
copper alloy gilded thimble
Description
English: A copper alloy 'beehive' thimble of two piece construction. It consists of the rolled decorated tube and a plain domed top. The decoration does not appear to be machined. It consists of seven bands of a cable motif, each going in the opposing direction to the two bands adjacent to it. There are remnants of what appears to be a gilded finish in the pattern. The top appears to have had a white metal finish, possibly silvering or tinning. The rim of the thimble has been largely lost, leaving an uneven edge. Dating has proved problematic due to the lack of a convincing parallel. Overall shape & method of manufacture indicate a probable date range of c1500 to c1700 AD. The hand done decoration suggest it is German or Dutch and pre-dates 1700, the two part construction suggests late eighteenth century British made. Overall it seems most likely that the original manufacture occurred between c1500 and c1700 AD, with a possible repair to the dome at a later date.

The length is 23mm, width 21mm, thickness 15mm, and the weight 6.42g.
