Title |
Copper alloy strap fitting with a heart-shaped frame and a trefoil-shaped terminal |
||
Description |
English: Complete cast copper alloy strap fitting of probable Post-medieval date. Length 36mm, width 24mm and 3mm thick. Weight 9.11g. The front is generally convex and the rear is flat. Viewing the fitting from the front it is a symmetrical heart-shape frame with a stylised trefoil-shaped terminal below. The inside edges of the frame are bevelled slightly, so that the sides slope inwards. At the top centre of the frame, immediately above the point of the heart, is a small vertical groove. There is another similar groove on either side. However, these two grooves are at an angle of about 45 degrees to the vertical. Each side lobe of the trefoil shaped terminal has a circular indentation, about 3mm in diameter and about 2.5mm in depth. The indentations may have carried decorative material which has not survived. The rear of the mount is flat and plain and has two integral spikes which are turned downwards at right angles. Viewing the rear of the fitting, the upper spike is situated at the top. This spike, however, is slightly off-centre to the left. The lower spike is centrally situated and is level with the junction of the frame and the trefoil-shaped terminal. The fitting is generally in a good condition but has small areas of active bronze disease, particularly around the front of the terminal. |
