Copy of Note_ to R. H. Pittman.

Sent thro. Gov. Gamble.

Mar. 30. 1863

Rich. H. Pitman Esq–

Sir. There weeks ago I sent a message to you that your man Archer was in the neighborhood of St Louis, & asking you to put a price on him. Last week I requested Judge Barton Bates to write to same effect, & suppose he did so. Since that time, Archer was forcibly taken from my place, but was immediately brought by order of the Prov. Mar. [Provost Marshal] under whose protection he has been for a mo. [month] past. He now has papers, which will, I presume, protect him as long as martial law continues. But I prefer not to keep him in my service, unless I have full legal title, & am still ready to buy him from you, if you will fix a fair price for him under the circumstances. Of course I wd. [would] not pay a high price, for no one can hold slave property here, except at the will of the slave, & I shd. [should] emancipate him & hire him as a free man, taking my chances of even getting my money back again. I shd. [should] be willing to leave the price to be fixed by Gen. Gamble & Judge Bates & any third person selected by them, if they cannot agree.

My desire has been & is to do what is right in the premises.

And I remain

&c &c
