Description

Delayed in Sydney and unable to travel to Aotearoa New Zealand, William Hobson drew up this list of officers needed for the future colony. It was given to George Gipps on 13 January 1840. Before his departure on 18 January he was provided with an assortment of local men who were to form the nucleus of a New Zealand civil service. The officers provided were George Cooper (Treasurer), Felton Mathew (Surveyor-General), Willoughby Shortland (Police Magistrate), James Freeman (Chief Clerk), and some NSW police. Another clerk, Samuel Grimstone, followed in March, along with further mounted police.

The letter comes from a bound register of correspondence to Gipps, held in the Governor record group (archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewEntity.do?code=16591).
