Description

Cpl. John Cheeseman (CP 955), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Corporal John Cheeseman, Company I, 13th Ohio volunteers, sits showing a gunshot wound to his back. He received this wound at a battle near Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 19th, 1865. Caption reads: “Gunshot wound of axilla. Corpl. John Cheesman Co. I, 13th Ohio.”

History is on reverse: “John Cheeseman. John Cheeseman. Corporal Co. I., 13th Ohio, Age 28. Admitted to Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital from City Point Va. April 19th 1865, with gunshot wound, the ball entering below the right axilla and emerging near lower angle of right scapula. Wounded April 19th, 1865, near Appomattox Court House. Treatment supporting, and simple dressing. May 26th, the wound is now nearly healed. Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, R.B. Bontecou, Surgeon U.S. Vols., In charge.”
