O Crasto de Palheiros, ou Fragada do Castro, é uma imponente crista quartzítica que foi sendo paulatinamente esculpida e construída pelas populações daquela região da Terra Quente transmontana entre o início do 3º milénio a.C. – Calcolítico – e o Presente. Entre 2900 e 2300 antes de Cristo toda a crista, com 2,5 ha, foi transformada num grande monumento pétreo, pré-histórico. No 5º século antes de Cristo, durante a denominada Idade do Ferro, foi escolhido de novo por populações indígenas para a fundação dum povoado. Este povoado durou cerca de 500 anos pois foi abandonado por volta do final do séc. I d.C., já durante a ocupação romana nesta região. Dos tempos que se seguiram, somente percebemos a utilização do local como campo de cultivo (de cereais e de leguminosas em regime de sequeiro) e de recolha de lenha por parte das populações das aldeias de Varges, Palheiros e Monfebres.
