Summary

[edit]
Description

The church was built in the late fourteenth century and replaced a small church on this site. There was also another church in Cromer which eventually fell into the sea due to cliff erosion. The current church consists of a tall western tower with porch, nave with north and south porches, seven bay arcades, chancel, and south chapel. The tower is the tallest of any Norfolk church at 160 feet and is lavishly detailed. There is a five light west window and the tower contains eight bells. The nave has clerestory windows and most of the windows have clear glass giving an impression of space and lightness. There is a Victorian hammerbeam roof to the nave and chancel.

The chancel is largely rebuilt and has a seven light east window. In the eighteenth century the church had declined to a semi-ruinous state, and consideration was given to demolishing the church completely. The chancel had been blown up with gunpowder, as it was in such a poor state in the late seventeenth century. The church was restored in the latter part of the nineteenth century by Blomfield.

The font is a 19th-century copy of one at Yaxham. In 1897 the organ, by Norman and Beard was purchased from Bath Abbey.

Recently a Kitchen, Toilets and Coffee area have been added.
