On each side of the walls of this staircase, 2 big forepaws of an animal carved in stone can be seen. At the foot of the staircase, there are several pairs of shoes. In the background, we can see people climbing towards the peak of the rock on a ladder. English transcr.: International Campaign for the Safeguarding of sites and monuments in the "Cultural Triangle". At the request of the Sri Lankan Government, UNESCO i staking part in a five-year programme to restore and protect the principal sites and monuments within a zone marked out by the ancient cultural capitals of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy. Lion platform half-way up the rock. Much of the beast is gone, but the vast forepaws remain to indicate its colossal proportions.
