Summary

[edit]
Description

c/n 1 The Sparrowhawk was designed from the outset as a parasite fighter to operate from US Navy Airships. Seven were built and flew from the helium-filled airships USS Akron and USS Macron between 1931 and 1935. This example is the second prototype and was built by Curtiss as a private venture with the unofficial designation XF9C-2. Initially civil registered as NX986M, it was later bought by the US Navy and given the Bureau number 9264 while the designation XF9C-2 was made official. After the USS Macon was lost in 1935, the aircraft’s skyhook was removed and she was operated on general duties by NAS Anacostia. Donated to the Smithsonian Institute in 1939, she was restored using parts from F9C-2 Sparrowhawks 9056 and 9057. Since restoration she has always been painted as 9056 and now carries the markings worn by 9056 when flying from the USS Macon. She is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum. Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
