DescriptionCzesław Miłosz's grave in the crypts of the Church of St. Stanislaw (6608447439) (2).jpg |
I like like his poetry so I was thrilled to stumble upon his grave! Known alternately as the Pauline Church and the Church on the Rock, and situated on a rocky hillock called Skałka, this is Poland’s second holiest sanctuary. Krakow bishop Stanislav was put to death here in 1079; legend has it that his body was miraculously reassembled, which made a fitting symbol of the restoration of Poland’s unity after years of fragmentation. A martyr’s cult began immediately after his death, worshipping him as someone who exposed the excesses of the king who had him executed. In 1088 his relics were moved to Wawel Cathedral where they remain today. In 1253 he was canonized and became the chief patron saint of Poland. Throughout the Middle Ages his cult was pivotal in forming the country’s tradition of holding those in power to accountability. All of Poland’s king-elects had to come here on their coronation to atone for the sins of their predecessors. The present church is the fourth on the site; nevertheless, visitors can still see three dark spots of St. Stanislav’s blood on the church wall. Since 1472 the church has belonged to the Pauline Fathers, who have a monastery here. |
