Object history
Deutsch: Infolge seiner wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung erhielt der Ort 1950 Stadtrecht. Wie viele ehemals ritterschaftliche Orte führte die Gemeinde vor 1800 kein eigenes Siegel. Benutzte sie seit Beginn des 19. Jahrhundert ein reines Schriftsiegel, so ist im Stempel der Zeit um 1850 ein von gekreuzten Laubzweigen in Form eines Kranzes umgebener ovaler Schild mit einem W über einem Wellenschildfuß (?) enthalten. Spätere Siegel zeigen in etwa das heutige Wappenbild, das im Jahre 1902 vom Generallandesarchiv nach den Wünschen der Gemeinde gezeichnet und in den Farben festgelegt wurde. Die zunächst den heraldischen Regeln widersprechende „natürliche" Farbe der Bäume wurde in den sechziger Jahren korrigiert. Der Wellenbalken weist „redend" auf den Fluss Wehra hin, an dem die Stadt liegt und von dem ihr Name abgeleitet ist. Die Bäume versinnbildlichen den Waldreichtum.
