One of the most popular tourist attractions during the summer season in Montreal was a ride on the panoramic open air streetcar of the Montreal Tramway Company, affectionately nicknamed “Golden Chariots”. Four of these charming streetcars were built in Montreal. The first two came out of the Hochelaga workshop in 1905 and inaugurated a service soon copied by several Canadian cities, including Quebec City, Winnipeg and Vancouver. In view of their growing popularity, two other scenic streetcars were built in 1924 at the Youville workshop.

The most enjoyable tour circled the “two mountains”, Mount Royal and Westmount, delighting Montrealers and tourists alike. During the Second World War, the four scenic streetcars are converted for the transport of workers to the weapons factories before resuming their peaceful service after 1945 when they are used almost every summer until their withdrawal in 1958.

All four “Golden Chariots” have been carefully preserved by museums. In addition to number 3, Exporail has number 1 (built in 1905). Both are still functional but only number 3 still circulates occasionally on the museum site.
