Built in 1895, this locomotive was put into operation by the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad as number 78. Following a reorganization of the locomotive fleet, its number became 9150. In 1910, it was bought by Atlantic Equipment Company, which sold it the following year to the contractor E. F. & G. E. Fauquier, one of the builders of the National Transcontinental Railway (now integrated with Canadian National).

In 1920 the locomotive was sold again, this time to the Maritime Coal & Power in Nova Scotia, where it became the second to bear the number 5. Essentially unchanged since its construction, this locomotive is the perfect illustration of late 19th century technology, notably characterized by flat side-valves and a deckless cab leaving the entire space for the massive boiler.

Its tender, which is not the original, comes from a Canadian National locomotive, probably a “Consolidation” model manufactured in 1907 for the Intercolonial Railway. It is not unusual for railway companies to replace the tender over the life of a locomotive and Maritime No. 5 is no exception to the rule. One fact to be noted is that due to the exceptional design quality of this model, it was copied for decades by other manufacturers.

Given to the Museum in 1961, this locomotive is one of the few by this manufacturer that has been preserved.

All the information used with the pictures was taken from information at the Canadian Railway Museum Site.
