Description DSP-23 early warning satellite: Shown here is a replica of a Defense Support Program satellite. The satellite costs more than $400 million, orbits at an altitude of over 22,000 miles, weighs more than 5,000 pounds and is roughly the size of a bus. Flight 23 marked the end of a 36-year era of DSP satellites. The program will be succeeded by the Space-Based Infrared System program.
