Title
DUR-B9BAC6 post medieval silver spoon
Description
English: A silver spoon. The bowl of the spoon is oval and complete with little damage other than wear. On the underside of the bowl is a scratched or incised floral decoration surrounding the attachment of the stem which takes a "rat-tail" form and extends approximately halfway along the bowl. The stem extends for 35.38 mm before terminating in a break. The stem is rectangular in section with straight, parallel sides along the length. There is scratched decoration along the length of the stem on both sides.

The trifid spoon is the earliest spoon of modern form (Snodin, p.29). This is a 'lace-back' example (Snodin, p.31), so named because of the lace like scrolling foliage engraved on the back of the bowl. Trifid spoons became popular in the 1670s possibly following the French examples imported during the time of the restoration and the style lasted up until around 1700.

A similar example has been recorded on the database (2012 T901, SUSS-69C4A3).
