Notes There are 2 vols bound in the same style, part 1 is Davis809, part 2 is Davis810. Macchi states;North Italy, c1550. an identical example (Homeri Odissea,Basle, Oporinus, 1549) is kept in the private Alberto Falck collection (Milan) (Giulia Bologna, Legature, Mondadori, Milan, 1998, p. 93). Perhaps executed for the venetian printer Gabriel Giolito de Ferrari who used the phoenix device as his printer's mark (Martin Breslauer, Catalogue 102, p. 87, n. 55). Other examples: 1) Vittoria Colonna , Rime, Venice, 1548) is in the Vatican Library (T. de Marinis, La legatura artistica, I, n. 910, p.74, plate CLIII); 2) Suetonius, XII Caesares, Ms. 1433 Princeton University Library , New Jersey, Greenville Kane Collection 44 (T. de Marinis, La legatura artistica, II, p. 116-117, n. 2155, pl. Fumagalli, L'arte della legatura, p. 61, n. 255, pl. XIX) bound by the "Binder of Ulrich Fugger 's Bible (A. Hobson, La legatura a Bologna, p. 28); 5) Appianus Alexandrinus, Romanarum historiarum, de bellis punicis, liber ….De bellis illyricis liber, Basileae, per Hier. Frobenium et Nic. Episcopium, 1544, Genoa University Library, 2.G.VI.38 (Mostra di legature dei secoli XV-XIX, p. 51, n. 64); 6) Homerus, Opus utrumque Homeri Iliados et Odysseae…..Porphyrii ….Homericarum quaestionum liber, Basileae, in officina Hervagiana, 1541, Genoa University Library, 3.CC.VIII.14 (Mostra di legature dei secoli XV-XIX, p. 51, n. 65). However, ARA Hobson suggests an attribution to the Genoese Grimaldi Binder, see Apollo & Pegasus, pp97-100 (thanks to Robin G. Halwas).
