Title |
die (6) |
||
Description |
English: Cast cubical lead die, square in plan, profile and section with impressed annulets or ring and dot motifs in groups of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 on different sides: 1 is opposite 3, 2 is opposite 4, and 5 is opposite 6. The sides (or faces) of the die each have a circular recessed area within the four raised corners, and the holes for the numbers look stamped with a similar tool which has left a raised ring around the perforation. The medieval system, according to Ottaway & Rogers, 2002, page 2949, has the arrangement of 1opposite 2, 3 opposite 4, and 5 opposite 6, which was used from the 13th to the 16th century, so this die likely post-dates that time. The arrangements are also relatively linear like Post-medieval examples, such as one in bone illustrated in Margeson (1993) on page 216, Fig.164, No.1768, dating from the 17th century, and not haphazard, like Medieval examples, such as one in chalk illustrated in Ottaway & Rogers (2002) page 2950, Fig.1518, No.14760, which is dated from the 14th century. |
