Title |
Dogs leash swivel |
||
Description |
English: A Medieval copper-alloy swivel strap-distributor, possibly from a dogs leash, dating to AD 1000 - 1100. The swivel comprises three conjoined components each of which rotated. The main body of the object is globular with an oval section. It is hollow. It is decorated with an openwork foliate design, four leaves decorate the outer edge, although worn, faint incised lines can be seen decorating the leaves. At the top and bottom of the swivel are sub-circular plates which is decorated with a series of closely spaced radiating grooves, in the centre of each is a circular hole. The circular holes house rectangular terminals, which are both pierced. The sides of the rectangular mounts are decorates with four incised lozenges joined together. One of the swivels still freely moves. Height: 42.42 mm Read (2016), Metal artefacts of antiquity, p 64 no 483, is almost identical. Read comments: 'uncertain function but possibly from dogs' leashes.' This object is dated to the 11th century, though it is likely such objects were used throughout the medieval period. |
