Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee (Reeve 071382), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Portrait of Dr. Anita Newcomb McGee.

Dr. McGee was an American physician in clinical medicine.  She was appointed the only woman Acting Assistant Surgeon in the United States Army on August 29, 1898 and was placed in charge of the Army's nurses.  She pursued the establishment of the Army Nurse Corps.  With the start of the Russo-Japanese War, she left a group of nine volunteer nurses to Japan in 1904 and created a field hospital for the Imperial Japanese Army.  She trained nurses from the Japanese Red Cross before crossing over into Korea and inspecting hospitals there.  She returned to the United States in 1905 where she wrote and lectured, before passing away in 1940.
