Summary
[edit]DescriptionDr. Lloyd Hines at optometry laboratory, Anchorage, Alaska, 1945.jpg |
English: Lloyd Walter Hines (1911-1991) was an American optometrist and real estate developer. Hines moved to Anchorage, Alaska in 1935, opening the first permanent optometry practice in the portion of Alaska west of the 141st parallel. Operating at first out of a room in the Anchorage Hotel and a nearby jewelry store, much of his initial business came from flying to remote outposts throughout Alaska. World War II and the influx of personnel to Anchorage changed his fortunes and he often worked twenty-hour-plus days making glasses for servicemen. In the mid-1950s, he sold his optometry practice and began developing subdivisions. The core of his work as a developer are most of the subdivisions surrounding the part of Anchorage known today as the U-Med District. Northeast of Alaska Methodist University, he retained a two-acre tract in the corner of a subdivision he developed and built a mansion, which was demolished in 2006 and replaced with a charter school. In this photo, he's seen working in his optometry laboratory at 525 West Fourth Avenue, with a pair of employees at work behind him. |
