Description
English: Embroidered dress; part of theatre costume of 'The Brescians'; used in NZ sleeveless 1920s style green silk dress with overdress of metallic thread loosely woven in vertical stripes in variations of gold. Overskirt at waist of dropped gold netting with machine embroidered border with gold metallic thread at hem, the skirt is gathered at sides and held by attached motifs of embroidery and beadwork in gold and green, each side is different. Yoke like insert at neck and shoulders of gold embroidered netting and at gussets in underarms. No openings or fastenings.

Notes Embroidered dress - part of theatre costume worn by members of 'The Brescians' concert party The Brescians were a singing troupe formed in the UK in the 1890s by the Hayward Brothers, including Henry and Rudall Hayward and their wives, Domenica and Adelina Martinengo. They toured New Zealand several times in the early 1900s performing with the West Picture Show at His Majesty's Theatre and at the Fuller's Opera House in Auckland. Subsequently the Henry Hayward and Rudall Hayward families settled in New Zealand. The two brothers were involved in establishing cinema throughout New Zealand but especially in Auckland where, as Hayward Enterprises they acquired the lease of the Royal Albert Hall and opened the city's first permanent picture theatre ion 1908.
